False positive/negative HIV tests

Are false positive/negative HIV tests possible?

While most approved HIV tests are very reliable, your results may be false positive or false negative. This also depends on when you were exposed to the virus and when you got tested. The window period or the time between HIV exposure and the time you can get an accurate test result. This is due to the fact that your body takes time to create antibodies for the infection. Since there is a chance that your test is inaccurate, it is useful to repeat the test to confirm your status. Overall, false positive/negative HIV tests are possible
